Rhys was raised on an upland sheep and beef farm in north Wales and is currently a lecturer in livestock science at IBERS, Aberystwyth University. His main research interest includes the sustainable control of trematode and nematode infections in cattle and sheep, the ecology of intermediate snail hosts.
