Career: PhD at Thoroughbred Breeders Association Equine Fertility Unit, Newmarket – under Supervision of Professor W.R. ‘Twink’ Allen – on ‘Maternal recognition of pregnancy in the mare’ HBLB scholarship/Dorothy Russell Havemeyer Foundation fellowship; 1997–1999 Lecturer in Animal Reproduction at Cambridge University Veterinary School; 1999–present Utrecht University, since 2007 Professor of Equine Medicine and Reproduction. Since 2007, extraordinary Professor at Department of Production Animal Sciences, Onderstepoort Veterinary School, Pretoria, South Africa.
Interests: Equine reproduction; early embryonic development, early pregnancy loss and embryo-maternal interaction during implantation, consequences of perturbations during early pregnancy for subsequent development of the fetus/foal; assisted reproduction – refinement of techniques for gamete/embryo preservation and assisted breeding stallion fertility; development of assays to more accurately assess/predict likely fertility or identify sperm-based defects responsible for sub-fertility; wildlife reproduction – assisted breeding and contraception (especially in elephants).
