Profile of Dr James Kinross

Qualified: Imperial College, London. Institution/Practice: St Mary’s Hospital. Career: Dr James Kinross is a clinical lecturer in surgery at Imperial College London. He is a practicing surgeon, with a specialist interest in minimally invasive surgery for colon cancer. He trained at St Mary’s Hospital in London and graduated from Imperial in 2001. He obtained his PhD in 2010 at Imperial, where he studied how gut bacteria influence human metabolism during surgery. Interests: He has a scientific interest in computational and systems medicine, and specifically how the gut ‘microbiome’ influences human health and the aetiology of colon cancer. He leads a research team at the clinical phenome centre at Imperial, which is developing mass spectrometry technologies that provide surgeons with real time information on tumour biology during operations (this is known as the iKnife) and he is developing novel approaches for mass spec based imaging for studying cancer biology. Dr Kinross has a secondary interest in the development of ‘virtual worlds’ for clinical education and major incident planning.
