Profile of Prof Richard Piercy
Qualifications: MA VetMB MS PhD DipACVIM MRCVS.
Qualified: University of Cambridge. Institution/Practice: Royal Veterinary College.
Career: Richard qualified from Cambridge University in 1994. After 2 years working in private equine practice in the UK, he moved to the USA and completed a residency in equine internal medicine at The Ohio State University and a Master of Science degree in muscle physiology and exertional rhabdomyolysis of Alaskan sled dogs working with Professor Ken Hinchcliff. He returned to the UK to complete his PhD in molecular and cellular biology of human muscular dystrophy as a Wellcome Trust Fellow at the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre, with Prof Francesco Muntoni and Dr Sue Brown. Richard is Professor of Comparative Neuromuscular Disease at the Royal Veterinary College, London and heads the Comparative Neuromuscular Disease Laboratory which provides a service for the histopathological assessment of muscle biopsy samples from veterinary clinical cases.
Interests: Richard’s research interests include muscle and exercise physiology, primary muscle disorders in horses, dogs and humans and comparative aspects of neuromuscular problems in veterinary patients. His clinical interests include horses with neurological and neuromuscular problems. He acted as lead neurological consultant for horses in the 2012 London Olympics and is Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and a specialist in equine medicine in the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
