Profile of Prof Peter Hamilton
Professor Peter Hamilton is Head of the Bioimaging and Informatics Research Group at Queen's University Belfast and is founder of PathXL Ltd. He has for the past 25 years been leading research on computer vision and decision support in diagnostic cancer pathology and the identification of novel digital tissue and cell markers for companion diagnostics, prognostics and for predicting response to therapy in cancer. Recent work has focussed on high throughput image analysis of whole slide images for tissue biomarker discovery, patient stratification and personalised medicine. Novel work includes the computation of chromatin phenotype signatures using digital texture analysis, the development of case-based image retrieval for image search and evaluation and case-based reasoning approaches for developing prognostic algorithms. Approaches using Bayesian belief networks have led to the development of novel virtual training environments for pathology. Professor Hamilton has published extensively in this field (>100 publications) and has successfully managed in excess of £12 million in competitive grant funding. He has sat the committees of a number of major pathological research organisations including the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland and the International Society for Cellular Oncology. As a founder of PathXL, Professor Hamilton has successfully married an outstanding academic career with the establishment of a thriving company that take new ideas and technologies to market as part of a sustainable business.
