Profile of Mary Nicholas
Nicholas is Professor of Russian in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She has published extensively on Soviet and post-Soviet literature, art, culture, and language. Her new book on Moscow Conceptualism, 1975-1985: Words, Deeds, Legacies (Bloomsbury, 2024) looks at the way late-Soviet unofficial artists rejected elitist notions of art for art’s sake in the "underground" in favor of a more open, democratic, and on-going dialogue about art and everyday concerns.
