Profile of Mr Michael Hewetson
I obtained my undergraduate veterinary qualifications from Onderstepoort (University of Pretoria) in South Africa in 1999. After graduating, I moved to the United Kingdom and worked for a year in Northern England as a private equine practitioner. I then completed a residency in equine internal medicine, critical care and anaesthesia at the University of Glasgow under the mentorship of Professor Sandy Love. I obtained my RCVS certificate in equine internal medicine in 2003 and my European diploma in equine internal medicine in 2005. After completing my residency, I moved to the Middle East to work as a specialist in a sports medicine clinic that provided veterinary care for the Thoroughbred racehorse and endurance industry in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE. In 2009, I moved to Finland to take up a position as a clinical teacher in equine internal medicine at the University of Helsinki. My current job involves providing a specialist service in equine internal medicine the University of Helsinki equine teaching hospital, undergraduate teaching and clinical research. My field of research is gastrointestinal permeability studies in the horse.
