Profile of Dr Alex Mühleip

Mitochondria are cell organelles with important functions in cell metabolism, signalling and energy conversion. Proper organisation and folding of mitochondrial membranes are vital for organelle function. Our lab studies the structure and function of mitochondrial membrane-shaping protein complexes in human parasites, and the bioenergetic role of mitochondrial energy-converting complexes in human mitochondrial disorders. To study these macromolecular machines, we combine biochemical and structural biology methods, with a focus on high-resolution cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and in situ cryo-tomography.
