Profile of Anna Stanisz-Lubowiecka
I'm an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics (University of Reading), interested in the relationship between language and politics. In current project, entitled Language for and against Democracy: Ideologies and Metalinguistic Discourse in Poland and Beyond, I'm focusing on maximising the impact of my doctoral research into the role of language ideologies in supporting and challenging democratic regimes. In particular, I'm working on a monograph, based on my PhD thesis entitled The Polish Language and Politics. Language Ideologies in Polish Professional Metalinguistic Discourse (1970-2023), which I'm going to publish with Routledge. During the Fellowship, I'm also further developing my current research and disseminating it to academic and non-academic audiences.
In my previous role of Associate Lecturer in Applied Linguistics (UoR DELAL), I convened a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate modules and supervised MA students. I completed my PhD at University College London, School of Slavonic and East European Studies in July 2024. I've been awarded numerous scholarships, including AHRC (CEELBAS DTP) Doctoral Studentship (2018–2023), SSEES Excellence Scholarship (2022), and Scholarship of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of Poland (2015). In April 2024, I was nominated for University of Reading Teaching Excellence Award. Beyond academia, I'm a poetry translator and have published my translations of Ewa Lipska's poetry in 'The Yale Review', 'Massachusetts Review', 'Continental Magazine' and as a book and album.
