In 1929 Osip Mandelstam spent his winter in Kiev, where he briefly served as a film reviewer at the Ukrainian Film Studio.  His disparaging review of the film, Doll with Millions, was published in the obscure film publication in Ukrainian language, Kino. While Mandelstam’s piece had been neglected by scholars as the work of desperate hack writing, it exemplifies Mandelstam’s poetic prose at its best, anticipating his prose masterpiece, Fourth Prose. This paper places this rather obscure review in the context of his work and his time.
