The presentation explores the development of Czechoslovak-Chinese relations in the interwar period as part of the broader network of Czechoslovak-Far East connections. Drawing on diplomatic correspondence, consular reports from Shanghai and Nanjing, trade and industrial documentation and press materials, the study examines how Czechoslovakia pursued relations with East Asia through business, military, and diplomatic channels. What motivated Czechoslovakia’s pursuit of ties with the Republic of China despite geographical and cultural difference? How did the presence of Czechoslovak troops at the Trans-Siberian railway affect the diplomatic ties? And how did Czechoslovak industries such as Škoda Works or Bata Company shape the relations between the two young republics? Finally, the presentation will highlight the challenges China’s civil war, the Manchurian crisis and the onset of WW2 posed to Czechoslovakia’s activities in China. The research highlights Czechoslovakia’s role as a surprisingly active actor in East Asia in this period and showcases the global ambitions of the young republic and its industries at this time.
