Discussion

Using the forgotten history of peat extraction in central Russia, this presentation foregrounds the significance of largely overlooked resources, forms of labour and places for our understanding of the Soviet economy. A discussion of how scale matters in economic history, the paper will highlight the importance of regional perspectives in Soviet economic history on the one hand and situate the Soviet economy within wider conversations about the role of labour and nature in the history of modern growth on the other.
