The report is intended to draw attention to illegal migration on the border between Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire in the 1850s - 1890s (within the administrative boundaries of the modern Ternopil region of Ukraine). The author will identify the main features of illegal flows of people from the Russian Empire caused by military mobilization (1850s), anti-Jewish pogroms (1890s) or participation in Ukrainian national or revolutionary movements. The territorial scope of the proposed report is determined by the fact that, for example, the Brody section of the Austro-Hungarian-Russian border of that period has been relatively well researched, while the Ternopil section (despite the fact that the largest transport and migration flows in the specified period were observed here) currently does not find sufficient coverage. On the other hand, an array of archival sources, memoirs of participants in illegal processes, and even the folk culture of the former border region indicate the importance of the impact of illegal migrations. Specific cases of illegal migration on the border across the Zbruch River of Ukrainian national figures, deserters, socialist revolutionaries, Muscovites and ordinary job seekers will be presented. Attention will also be drawn to the relationship between political and military migration and the activities of smugglers in the area of the cities of Zbarazh, Pidvolochysk, Husyatyn and Skala of the modern Ternopil region of Ukraine. The research is based on archival sources from Ukrainian archives (some of which are being included in scientific circulation for the first time) and is part of the development of habilitation research.
