News aggregators are digital platforms that automatically collect and organize news stories from various sources, allowing users to access them in one place. This paper explores how the two dominant news aggregation systems on the Russian-language Internet recommend news differently on topics such as climate change, the energy industry, and environmental issues.
Dzen News, previously known as Yandex.News, dominates the Russian news aggregation landscape. It employs an algorithm to curate content for online audiences and acts as a key intermediary for news dissemination to the public. Its influence among Russian Internet users is considerable, as its top five news selections are prominently displayed just below the Yandex Search homepage. Google News is also available in Russian; however, because it is not integrated into the main Google search page, it receives less attention from Russian-speaking users. Moreover, since March 2022, Russian authorities have restricted access to Google News.
The research material consists of more than 27,000 news items collected from Dzen News and Google News between 24 February 2021 and 24 February 2023. A thematic analysis was conducted on the results of a keyword search to narrow the dataset to items addressing climate change, environmental issues, or the energy industry. Based on a content analysis, this paper examines the nature of climate-related stories featured in the aggregators’ top lists and the primary sources to which they refer. It also investigates whether there has been a shift in climate-related coverage following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and if so, the nature of that change. Finally, the paper presents a case study analysing coverage of the UN Security Council vote on 13 December 2021 on a resolution to integrate climate-related security risk into conflict-prevention strategies, which was vetoed by Russia.
