Discussion

The global video game, which, subtly shaping perceptions of national cultures, has become a significant medium for cross-cultural communication. This article focuses on the reception of Russian video games within the Chinese cultural sphere, exploring their role as a vector for "soft power" or, more precisely, digital cultural permeation.

Taking the Russian-made multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game PANZAR (混沌试炼, Chaos Trial, official introduction by Perfect World in 2015) as a case study, this research analyzes how its distinctively Russian aesthetic and its "hardcore" gameplay were localized and accepted in China, wherein the aesthetic is infused with folk art elements such as Khokhloma painting.

The article argues that, for China-Russian cultural exchange and fusion in the way of video games, PANZAR has served as a dual-direction conduit. On one hand, it involves introducing Chinese players to Russian digital artistry and competitive gaming culture; on the other, it encourages Russian developers to incorporate bespoke Chinese-themed maps and aesthetics tailored to the local market. As a result, it fosters a unique space for intercultural dialogue.

Furthermore, the article examines how community-level interactions, such as e-sports (electronic sports) tournaments and symbolic gestures, have built bridges between the youth of both nations, transforming the digital arena into a platform for people-to-people connectivity. This work therefore contributes to our understanding of how video games can influence cultural perceptions beyond state-led initiatives.

This article concludes that the permeation of PANZAR in Chinese Video Games sphere exemplifies a form of "digital subtle influence," thereby commercial digital products can effectively foster mutual cultural appreciation, and reshape national images among international audiences.
