Discussion

The ongoing war in Ukraine and its impact on neighbouring countries necessitate research on issues of survival and adaptation to a foreign language environment, preservation of language, culture and identity of forced migrants from Ukraine. The Russian-Ukrainian war also shows how countries that welcomed migrants and refugees from Ukraine took an active role in assisting them.

Apart from resolving the issue politically and economically, we observe the readiness to help Ukrainians adapt at the linguistic level as well: there is a great need for teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language to volunteers, preschool and high school teachers, doctors and other social strata. In this regard, we note the appearance of a large number of phrasebooks, which are different in content from those that existed in peacetime.

In the history of the development of linguistic science, phrasebooks have always been a reaction to the practical needs of those who find themselves in particular circumstances (the first Ukrainian phrasebook of the 16th century for merchants), modern phrasebooks for football fans, foreign students, policemen, etc.

Authors interest is drawn to materials designed to facilitate communication in times of crisis, namely when travelling abroad in connection with the war. Since the Second World War, a series of phrasebooks for Ostarbeiters from various countries, who ended up in labour camps in Germany, has been known. It would be interesting to draw parallels between the phrasebooks of the Second World War and the phrasebooks that appeared during the Russian-Ukrainian war after February 24, 2022.

Therefore, the goal of the article is to research modern online materials and phrasebooks that appeared after the large-scale emigration of Ukrainian citizens abroad. Special attention is paid to “new” topics that have not been included in conversational books (for example, psychological adaptation of children in foreign schools, work of volunteers, and surveys about needs).
