The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) as a disruptive technology into the teaching of Russian offers various innovative opportunities in language pedagogy.
This paper is based on a case study of introducing AI tools for teaching complete beginners, and intermediate students of Russian at the University of St Andrews in 2023-24.
It explores how AI-driven tools can enhance language acquisition, personalise learning experiences, as well as broaden accessibility for neurodiverse learners of Russian. The paper also delves into the dilemmas faced by educators in balancing AI adoption with traditional teaching methods.
In addition to discussing opportunities, challenges, and dilemmas, this presentation also aims to provide a platform for pedagogical discussion focussing on using AI in teaching Russian and other Slavonic languages.
