Recent scholarship has illuminated new aspects of the dance and theatre innovations of B. Nijinska and V. Nijinsky. This paper turns attention to the relationship between the two siblings. To what extent did the brother and sister inspire each other’s art? Did sibling rivalry or sibling synergy galvanize their ideas? To what extent do gender, cultural background, and other social forces come into play? By examining the siblings’ own writings, choreography, and outside sources, this paper will posit a theory of “sibling creativity” that goes beyond business arrangements and production history. Instead, by building on psychological and literary models, this paper will aim to provide new insights into the creative interchange of the Nijinskys and, I hope, to other creative siblings.
