Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, one of the most influential forms of response in Russian-speaking community has been anti-war songs, which represent both a creative reimagining of tragic events and a unique form of journalism. These musical and lyrical works not only reflect the personal experiences of their creators but also document war crimes committed by Putin’s regime and spread protest sentiments. However, many music critics view this blending of genres with skepticism, claiming that creativity is over (np. Nikolay Ovchinnikov).
The goal of this research is to analyze Russian anti-war music that emerged in response to the war in Ukraine, focusing on its role as both a creative and journalistic phenomenon. The study aims to answer several questions: How do Russian anti-war musicians use creativity to express their stance on the war in Ukraine? In what forms does the journalistic aspect manifest in these songs? How do anti-war songs influence public perception of the war?
The material for analysis will include the song lyrics of the group "Kasta" and the solo project of one of its members, Vladi, as well as the context of their creation and reception.
To achieve these goals, the method of close reading will be used to analyze the lyrics of anti-war songs. Additionally, there will be an analysis of interviews with musicians and critics, as well as monitoring of social media and platforms where these songs are published.
This research will contribute to understanding the role of music in shaping public opinion and cultural resistance during armed conflicts. It will also provide deeper insights into how art can function as a form of journalism, especially in conditions of censorship and restrictions on freedom of speech.
