Background
Discussion at a recent BSNR trainee meeting (London, 2021) highlighted substantial variation in UK neuroradiology training, including trainee commitments to routine and on-call work. There is limited understanding in neuroradiology training structure and delivery across the UK and how training opportunities compare to expected standards. To our knowledge this is the first national survey of its kind.
Objective
The aim is to identify different models of neuroradiology training and trainee expectations in the UK. Responses on diagnostic reporting and procedures performed can be evaluated against published curriculum requirements specific for neuroradiology trainees. It will also give an indication as to whether the current training and trainees’ career expectations match the job roles required to meet the predicted demands of neuroradiologists in the future.
Methods
A literature review was conducted via PubMed to identify any published literature on the training experience of speciality doctors. Different surveys and question types were evaluated to develop a comprehensive questionnaire addressing the aim of this study. A pilot survey was conducted using a provisional template and the final version of the questionnaire was developed and endorsed by BSNR and UKNG. Its questions encompass topics pertaining to trainee demographics, reporting and procedure activity, research and teaching commitments, and future goals. The online questionnaire is being distributed through communication portals of the BSNR and UKNG. Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology trainees in the UK who are at least 4 months into their subspecialist/higher training as well as qualified consultant neuroradiologists who are within the first 18 months after achieving CCT (certificate of completion of training) are eligible to participate in the study. All responses will be analysed with descriptive statistics and all respondents will be kept anonymous.
Results
Results pending with data collection currently in process. Data will be analysed in due course, in time for the BSNR AGM 2022.
Conclusions
This survey can be used to guide future training development at national, organisational, deanery and departmental levels.
