The Big Data revolution has brought with it many advances but also much hype in terms of its real impact on medical research and the clinic. Harnessing the full power of Big Data to address today’s clinical problems requires a genuine integration of disparate, diverse and inconsistent – as well as big - data. I will illustrate examples where integrative Big data is today helping cancer drug discovery and clinical applications. These will include examples of using machine learning for informing target selection for drug discovery; understanding cancer disease mechanisms and identifying novel drug repurposing oportunities; exploring emergent drug resistance and drug combinations to overcome it; and finally, the application of AI for predicting clinical side effects in real-world clinical trials. I will explore the opportunities and challenges for cancer medicine.
