Discussion

The paper investigates the values that transnational audiences attribute to Russophone post-punk, taking as a case study the Belarusian band Molchat doma (The Houses Are Silent) and exploring the band’s reception across different social media. The paper argues that this reception is far from homogeneous, as users may: a) disregard and obscure the author’s encoded meaning by poaching their music for self-expression; b) depoliticise and memeify post-Soviet post-punk; c) appreciate this genre as a hauntological safe space. The paper aims to contribute to ongoing debates around Soviet revivalism, digital consumption of music, and fandom on social media platforms.
