Profile of Dr David Drewry

Dr. Drewry was recruited to the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after a 25-year career in the pharmaceutical industry. At UNC he helped open the first US site of the Structural Genomics Consortium and he is one of the principal architects of the research strategy at the SGC-UNC to build an open and collaborative research network to promote target discovery. The scientific focus of his lab is the design and synthesis of inhibitors of understudied kinases. New potent and selective tool molecules, called chemical probes, are shared with the scientific community in order to elucidate the function of these understudied targets. In addition to these focused projects, he leads a collaborative project with pharmaceutical company partners to develop a tool set of kinase inhibitors called the Kinase Chemogenomic Set (KCGS) (https://www.sgc-unc.org/kcgs). The Drewry lab also ventures outside the kinase space with an exciting ongoing project utilizing fragment-based drug discover strategies and x-ray crystallography to identify and optimize small molecules that bind to the transcription factor brachyury, a driver of the rare cancer chordoma.
