Profile of Prof Michael McArthur

Michael Gained his PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Cambridge and held postdoctoral positions in Cape Town, Crete and Seattle studying how gene expression affects disease. Whilst in US co-founded a start-up using chromatin structure to find novel biomarkers associated with cancers, and was part of the team that raised $25M and filed 12 patents to create a robust technology platform. On return to the UK he joined the John Innes Centre to discover new antimicrobials and developed an interest in using oligonucleotides as tools to manipulate bacterial gene expression. He founded Procarta Biosystems to take these into the clinic and is the inventor on the family of 7 patents describing the technology. He is currently Professor of Nanomedicine at the University of East Anglia.
